On January 6 a major avalanche buried cars and motorists on US-40, about 60 miles west of Denver in close proximity to Winter Park ski resort area.

On a major traffic day for skiiers going to and from Winter Park, many cars were buried in what one Denver official said was the largest avalanche in Colorado history.

Fortunately, the Colorado Department of Transportation and rescue workers did an excellent job of moving quickly and efficiently to rescue all persons who were buried in the avalanche. This potential tragedy was averted by their skill, training and expertise.
